Blood Drives

The Beta Delta Omega Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is co-hosting a Blood Drive with Life Stream, the Blood Bank of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties on Thursday, February 5th between 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at SJC and MVC. The blood mobiles will be in the quad areas on both campuses. The blood drive is open to the public and parking has been relaxed for this event so the community members can come donate.

We hope you will consider donating blood and/or announcing this event to your students. Some information about the donation process is listed below. Please note, wait times may vary depending on the number of donors and volunteers present on the day of the blood drive.

THE DONATION PROCESS:

Making a donation of life-giving blood should take less than one hour. Life Stream takes a brief medical history, checks your blood pressure, pulse, temperature and your body's iron level. Only sterile, sealed and completely disposable materials are used once and then safely discarded.

1. REGISTRATION

Sign in with the receptionist and complete a brief health history questionnaire (approx. 15 minutes).

2. MINI-PHYSICAL

Take a "mini-physical" to review your medical history, check your blood pressure, pulse rate, body temperature and iron levels (approx. 15 minutes).

3. BLOOD DONATION

Your blood is drawn by a skilled medical professional using new, sterile and disposable materials (approx. 15 minutes).

4. COOKIES AND JUICE FOR ALL!

You're already done! Enjoy cookies, drinks and healthy snacks while relaxing in the canteen area.

HOW OFTEN CAN YOU DONATE BLOOD?

Your body quickly replenishes any blood that you donate. In fact, a healthy adult can donate whole blood every 56 days - or approximately 8 weeks. Plasma can be donated as often as once a month. Platelets can be given every 2 weeks up to 24 times each year. When you give through automation, also known as apheresis, you may be able to save more lives more often.

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU:

When donating blood, please be sure to bring a current photo ID, preferably a valid Driver License. If you don't have one of these, another form of ID with your photo on it is necessary.

WHAT TO EAT BEFORE DONATING BLOOD:

Before making a blood donation, you should eat at your regular mealtimes and drink plenty of liquids. You might also increase your consumption of "iron rich" foods a few days before making a blood donation because only donors with good iron levels are able to give the gift of life.

If you are unsure about your eligibility to donate blood here are a few guidelines:

- must be over 110 pounds of weight
- you must not be sick (for example having a cold)
- you must be at least 16 and younger then 76
- you cannot donate if you had a tattoo in the last 12 months
- if you lived overseas for extended periods of time you may be ineligible

More information will be available at the Phi Theta Kappa booth at the blood drives.

For more information contact Christina Yamanaka at 487-3522 or cyamanaka@msjc.edu on the SJC or Nick Reeves at 639-5735 or nreeves@msjc.edu on the MVC.

The Phi Theta Kappa Food and Toy Drive

The holiday season is upon us and this year especially many people in our community need your help. The Beta Delta Omega chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is holding its annual Holiday Food and Toy Drive to help Mt. San Jacinto community members. We are collecting food as well as holiday gifts for MSJC students, employees, and local San Jacinto and Menifee residents in need. Our chapter is trying to aid as many families as possible but we need your assistance. Every donation no matter how small helps!

We are looking for non-perishable food items which include boxed and canned goods. Our goal is to supply individuals or families with all the ingredients needed for a holiday meal. In addition, we are collecting gifts for adults, toys for children of all ages, and food or toys for family pets. Donations can be deposited in any of the donation boxes listed below that are located on both the Menifee and San Jacinto campuses.

MSJC faculty members and staff, Phi Theta Kappa officers, members, and alumni, as well as Child Development Center staff can nominate individuals or families in need. Please email suhrig@msjc.edu if you would like a nomination form or forms can be picked up in the ASB/Phi Theta Kappa office on the San Jacinto campus inside the cafeteria. The Beta Delta Omega chapter will assemble gift bags and holiday meals for nominated families on Friday, December 19th in room 1250C (SJC) starting at 8:00 a.m. If you have time, please join us on the 19th to help assemble the gifts and meals.

This is a friendly reminder that we have our fourth and last video lecture on Tuesday, December 2nd on the "Archaeological Evidence for the Origins of Affluence." The event will take place in Room 200 on the San Jacinto Campus from 5:30-7:30 p.m. It would be great to have as many officers in attendance as possible, and if your schedule allows, please arrive 15 minutes early to help set up. Professor Pam Ford has agreed to facilitate a discussion of this video lecture so it should be an interesting show! Have a great holiday break everyone and thank you for all of your hard work at the Induction Ceremony. Several Phi Theta Kappa members and their families have complemented you on the wonderful show you put together:)

Take care,
Christina
