Hello Phi Theta Kappans,
Want to do something amazing with that textbook you can no longer use and the bookstore can’t buy back? We have a solution that benefits our campus, the earth, and students around the world! Seriously!
Be Green! Be responsible! Help out your fellow human by providing education to children in the developing world while diverting books from landfills.
Donate your unwanted college-level books published within the past 10 years (highlighting/writing in books is fine), and any books used in a college class to our book drive. The Beta Delta Omega chapter of Phi Theta Kappa has partnered with Better World Books (www.betterworldbooks.com) to run a book drive that will benefit Room to Read (www.roomtoread.org) and we would love to have your support!
We will start the
Books collected will be put up for sale online to raise a sustainable stream of funding for Room to Read or sent for direct use in literacy programs around the world. If the books cannot be donated or sold, they are at the very least recycled. Book drives like this one have earned over $325,000 for Room to Read!
Thank you in advance for your help with our project – please spread the word to everyone you know!
Sincerely,
Christian Saupe

Hi Phi Theta Kappans,
I hope you are enjoying your Spring Break. Our chapter will be holding our officer elections for the 2009-2010 school year starting the first week of May. If you are interested in a leadership opportunity in our chapter, please click on the "Elections" button on the course menu bar of our Blackboard site. The offices of President, Vice President, Executive Finance Officer, Scholarship Officer, Service Officer, and many others are available.
Students are the driving force of our chapter. As such, becoming an officer will provide you a unique opportunity to interact with an amazing group of talented and driven colleagues who lead our chapter every year. Officers organize community service events, work with college administrators and faculty, investigate and advertise scholarship opportunities, attend regional conventions, and plan fellowship events throughout the year. Demonstrating leadership in our organization as an officer can give you the chance to make a difference on your college campus and in your local community as well as discover a new community of friends. In the long run it may also help you become more competitive to transfer to four-year institutions and for scholarship applications that often require a personal statement describing your leadership and community service experiences.
With the wide range of officer positions available with varying degrees of responsibilities, please consider applying to become an officer of the Beta Delta Omega chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Applications and the duties of each officer are posted to our Blackboard site along with an election timeline. Please note that the deadline to apply for officer positions is Monday, April 20th. If you have any questions about the election process, feel free to email me at cyamanaka@msjc.edu or contact the Phi Theta Kappa office (suhrig@msjc.edu or 951-487-3276).
I look forward to seeing your applications soon. Take care and enjoy the rest of your holiday!

Hello Beta Delta Omega,
For those of you who have applied for graduation and receive a letter confirming that you have met the requirements for your degree, MSJC will hold a "Grad Fair". At the Grad Fair there will be a cap, gown and tassel reserved in your name. Your Grad Fair Package will contain a gold tassel if you have maintained a 3.5 or higher, this tassel will have the "09" on it. If you have not maintained that GPA your tassel will be black and red with the "09" on it, which are the school colors. If you would like to wear the "Gold Regalia" that Phi Theta Kappans are allowed to wear, you will need to purchase your regalia from the Recognitions section at ptk.org. The price for a gold tassel is $10. The price for the gold sash is $18 as well as the blue and gold honor cords which are $13. Some members also choose to purchase the gold key medallion which is $22. Shipping charges will apply. Wearing the regalia is one of the benefits of being a member that make you stand out at graduation. Order your regalia early to avoid extra shipping charges or not getting it in time for graduation. Allow at least 2-3 weeks for regular shipping as they are very busy with orders as we get closer to graduation. Remember that the college would like you to wear only one of your tassels with your cap and gown.If you have any questions about graduation or ordering your regalia, please call or e-mail me. Congratulations on your academic success. We look forward to seeing you at graduation in your Phi Theta Kappa Regalia!
Sincerely,
Sandi

Good afternoon Phi Theta Kappa Beta Delta Omega!
If you are planning on graduating this semester, please make sure you apply for graduation by March 13th. The form is available in Enrollment Services for your "Graduation Check" to make sure you have completed all the courses required for your degree(s). In addition you may want to meet with your counselor to verify which degrees you have earned. If you have not listed each degree you have earned, you will only recieve those that are listed on the grad check form.
Have a great day!

The Beta Delta Omega Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is co-hosting a Blood Drive with Life Stream, the Blood Bank of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties on Thursday, February 5th between 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at SJC and MVC. The blood mobiles will be in the quad areas on both campuses. The blood drive is open to the public and parking has been relaxed for this event so the community members can come donate.
We hope you will consider donating blood and/or announcing this event to your students. Some information about the donation process is listed below. Please note, wait times may vary depending on the number of donors and volunteers present on the day of the blood drive.
THE DONATION PROCESS:
Making a donation of life-giving blood should take less than one hour. Life Stream takes a brief medical history, checks your blood pressure, pulse, temperature and your body's iron level. Only sterile, sealed and completely disposable materials are used once and then safely discarded.
1. REGISTRATION
Sign in with the receptionist and complete a brief health history questionnaire (approx. 15 minutes).
2. MINI-PHYSICAL
Take a "mini-physical" to review your medical history, check your blood pressure, pulse rate, body temperature and iron levels (approx. 15 minutes).
3. BLOOD DONATION
Your blood is drawn by a skilled medical professional using new, sterile and disposable materials (approx. 15 minutes).
4. COOKIES AND JUICE FOR ALL!
You're already done! Enjoy cookies, drinks and healthy snacks while relaxing in the canteen area.
HOW OFTEN CAN YOU DONATE BLOOD?
Your body quickly replenishes any blood that you donate. In fact, a healthy adult can donate whole blood every 56 days - or approximately 8 weeks. Plasma can be donated as often as once a month. Platelets can be given every 2 weeks up to 24 times each year. When you give through automation, also known as apheresis, you may be able to save more lives more often.
WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU:
When donating blood, please be sure to bring a current photo ID, preferably a valid Driver License. If you don't have one of these, another form of ID with your photo on it is necessary.
WHAT TO EAT BEFORE DONATING BLOOD:
Before making a blood donation, you should eat at your regular mealtimes and drink plenty of liquids. You might also increase your consumption of "iron rich" foods a few days before making a blood donation because only donors with good iron levels are able to give the gift of life.
If you are unsure about your eligibility to donate blood here are a few guidelines:
- must be over 110 pounds of weight
- you must not be sick (for example having a cold)
- you must be at least 16 and younger then 76
- you cannot donate if you had a tattoo in the last 12 months
- if you lived overseas for extended periods of time you may be ineligible
More information will be available at the Phi Theta Kappa booth at the blood drives.
For more information contact Christina Yamanaka at 487-3522 or cyamanaka@msjc.edu on the SJC or Nick Reeves at 639-5735 or nreeves@msjc.edu on the MVC.
